The growth of quality content and the rise of live streaming were the topic on everyone’s lips at JW Insights in Oslo, which gathered clients of JW Player from Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. 

Senior Sales Director, Jon Cagle opened proceedings with a review of trends seen over the past 12 months including a big rise in live-streamed content broadcast by our clients around the world, peaking with the fire of the Notre Dame Cathedral in France.  The Nordic region leads the way in live-streaming broadcast content with a well-established Video-On-Demand *VOD) ecosystem. 

Around the world video viewing, and video advertising, continues to grow.  The co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of JW Player, Jereon Wijering gave an overview of our product road map outlining how we plan to enable further growth for clients tapping the JW Platform.  This includes more products to facilitate an increase in advertising revenue, building on the development of video player bidding. These include contextual targeting technology as an alternative to audience targeting for programmatic advertising.

Jonas Söderqvist, the Regional Director for Northern Europe at PubMatic, one of our four partners for video player bidding, then joined a panel discussion on these trends including the increasingly complex world of video monetisation.  He was joined on stage by Annette Berg, the Digital Product Owner at Aller Media who emphasised the need to provide a premium quality live viewing experience for viewers. This was echoed by Erik Saastard, the product manager video at Schibsted who explained how this relates to subscription revenue and gave insight into innovative trials at the publisher.  TV2 Danmark’s Christian Godske added the perspective of a premium broadcaster and described the role of premium branded content and live broadcasts of shows like ‘Dancing with the Stars.’

The panel was moderated by Alaina Hall, JW Player’s Director of Account Management who relocated to the EMEA office last year.  The afternoon concluded with drinks and conversation in the hotel’s rooftop bar.
